The mission of the East Providence Police Department is to protect life, property and preserve the peace while creating and maintaining a proactive partnership with our residential and business community in an effort to enhance public safety and reduce the fear and incidence of crime within the City of East Providence.
We shall endeavor to improve the quality of life in our city by diligently identifying and addressing public safety and community concerns.

The East Providence Police Department is comprised of five major organizational components including the Office of the Chief of Police, the Patrol Division, the Detective Division, the Services Division, and the Operations Division. Numerous specialized units such as the Traffic Unit, Juvenile Unit, Prosecution Unit, Vice Unit, Training Unit, Community Policing Unit, and the Office of Professional Standards and School Resource Officers work within these divisions to provide a wide array of law enforcement services. The Department is currently authorized to maintain 99 sworn officers and 23 civilian personnel. The chief of police is responsible for the overall operation of the police department. The chief of police works with the administrative staff to set goals and objectives and ensures their realization by planning, organizing and directing personnel and resources to that end. The chief reports directly to the mayor.
Principle Responsibilities of the Police Department
- Identify, report and remove a variety of public safety hazards and to provide the safest possible environment for the citzens of East Providence.
- Investigate and prosecute all known incidents of crime.
- Serve the public by providing a wide-range of services from simple street directions to referrals to outside agencies based on the individual case.
- Ensure traffic safety through enforcement and education of the public.
- Provide a professional public safety communication center.
- Recruit and train qualified police officers to provide the best possible service to the residents of East Providence.
