Assistant City Solicitor
Salary: $90,000 plus benefits package
Description: Under the direction of the City Solicitor, the Assistant City Solicitor is responsible for drafting and reviewing legal documents, advising municipal officials and representing the City’s interests in a variety of legal forums. The Assistant City Solicitor is appointed by the mayor, subject to City Council approval and serves at the pleasure of the mayor.

- Conducts legal research.
- Drafts and reviewing legal documents, ordinances, regulations, contracts and agreements, memoranda of law, motion, pleadings, discovery, and other documents relating to litigation.
- Represents the City in lawsuits filed in the various state and federal courts.
- Prepares witnesses, conducting and appearing at depositions.
- Consults with the City Solicitor and with outside legal counsel.
- Appears before the City Council and the various boards and commissions of the City, as necessary.
- Advises employees and elected officials on such matters as ethics, open meeting, and public record laws, City ordinances and regulations, municipal land use/zoning, real estate, bankruptcy, employment, municipal finance, environmental, and procurement.
- Performs related work as required.
- Prosecutes Criminal Matters in RI District Court and other related matters in East Providence Municpal Court.
Desirable Experience, Abilities, Knowledge, and Skills:
- Knowledge and experience in state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the organization, operations and procedures of local government.
- Knowledge of labor and collective bargaining.
- Ability to multi-task and manage conflict.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand, interpret, and explain various types of correspondence, reports, and media.
- Ability to maintain good public relations and effective collaborative working relationships with City officials, boards and commission members, department heads, employees, and the general public.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform physical skills used in a typical office environment.
- Sufficient mobility to get back and forth from office to off-site meetings.
- Motor skills for activities such as moving objects, using office equipment such as telephones, personal computers, handheld technology, and other office equipment.
- Ability to read large quantities of documents in digital and print formats.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Eligibility to practice law in the State of Rhode Island.
Examination Weight:
- Oral 100 %.
