Public Works Department

The mission of the Department of Public  Works is to efficiently provide essential public work services for the entire community with a commitment to enhance the living and working environment within the City.

DEPARTMENT FUNCTIONS

Then department consists of nine (9) divisions including: Building Inspection, Central Garage, Engineering, Highway, Parks,  Public Building, Refuse and Recycling, Water Utilities, and Water Pollution Control.   
The Department of Public Works provides services to East Providence residents in the areas of streets and sidewalks, parks and grounds maintenance, refuse and recycling collection, engineering services, water distribution, wastewater treatment and collection and building code and inspection services. In addition, the department is responsible for the maintenance of all city-owned buildings and maintenance of the city's vehicles and equipment. The department coordinates streetlight repairs with National Grid.

Building Inspection

  • Issues building permits including plumbing, mechanical and electrical
  • Enforcement of RI State Building Code and City of East Providence ordinances
  • Responsible for Minimum Housing complaints and zoning issues

Central Garage

  • Day-to-day maintenance of all city vehicles
  • Repair of all city vehicles including police and fire
  • Maintains fuel supply for all city vehicles

Engineering 

  • Developes plans, specifications, and contracts for public works contracts
  • Inspects construction work within the city's right of way
  • Keeping and updating all city maps

Highway

  • Maintenance of 160 miles of city streets including snow and ice removal, pothole and trench repair
  • Provides and maintains traffic signs, traffic control signals and pavement marking for traffic control
  • Maintains and operates city's compost facility

Parks

  • Provides landscape services to all city buildings and right of ways
  • Maintenance and improvement to parks, playgrounds, sports fields and ballfields
  • Oversees and cares all public trees

Public Buildings

  • Maintenance of all city-owned buildings
  • Responsible for cleaning and repairs to all city buildings

Refuse and Recycling

  • Oversees the collection of rubbish, recycling and yard waste
  • Maintains drop off program for e-waste, motor oil, metals, etc.
  • Coordinates mattress and appliance collections

Water Utilities 

  • Provides water service to all city residents and businesses
  • Maintains and operates the water distribution system
  • Responsible for water meter reading, billing and customer service

Wastewater Facility and Collection System

  • Operation and maintained by Veolia Water Rhode Island, Inc. 
  • System consists of 26 sewer pumping stations
  • Maintains 130 miles of sewer pipelines
