Teen Services Librarian - East Providence Public Library

Pay Grade: 37
Starting Salary: $56,948 (Top Step: $67,677 after 3 years of service)

Summary: Under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator, the Teen Services Librarian is responsible for providing library services to teens and tweens in grades 4-12 (ages 9-19). The Teen Services Librarian is responsible for planning, promoting, and implementing programs and services for middle and high school students, upper elementary school students, parents, and teachers. Working primarily at the Weaver Library children’s room, the Teen Services Librarian occasionally covers the reference desk and fills in at the Riverside Branch Library and Fuller Creative Learning Center as needed.

  • Develops, conducts, and promotes varied services and programs for middle and high school students that reflect current trends and community needs.
  • Develops and maintains (selects, weeds, displays) the collection of materials aimed at middle through high school students, including materials for underrepresented and marginalized communities.
  • Provides and coordinates community service opportunities for middle and high school students.
  • Works with youth services staff to facilitate a smooth transition for children and tweens into teen services.
  • Provides reference services and technical assistance. 
  • Provides reader advisory services for kids in grades 6-12, middle and high school teachers, and community organizations.
  • Identifies service area gaps and implements outreach strategies to connect with nonusers, especially as a liaison to other agencies in the community serving teens and tweens.
  • Sets expectations and models appropriate, effective, and respectful interactions between teens, staff, and patrons.
  • Maintains an active online presence through the library’s website and social media.
  • Creates and maintains welcoming and inviting physical teen areas and virtual library environments that support enjoyable and productive use of library resources.
  • Recruits and supervises teen employees, interns and volunteers.
  • Provides visits to the public and private middle and high schools in East Providence.
  • Participates in professional library activities and cultivates relationships with other teen services library staff throughout the region.
  • Performs related duies as assigned.

  • Strong knowledge of young adult literature.
  • Ability to think creatively, innovate, and generate forward-looking ideas.
  • Forward-thinking and an enthusiastic advocate for teens and tweens.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively with the public, volunteers, staff, other city departments, and community partners.
  • Professional experience in a public library.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to integrate current and emerging technologies.
  • Must be able to travel between the three library locations.
  • Ability to work two evenings a week and alternating Saturdays.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Services from a program accredited by the American Library Association. (Degree must be conferred by September 2025).
  • Coursework in Teen Services Librarianship and/or professional experience working with teens.
