BUILDING INSPECTOR

(Pay Grade 41) $65,735- $78,189
Under the supervision of the Building Official, inspects buildings and structures to see that work is being done according to approved plans and in accordance with pertinent codes and ordinances; and makes reports relative to compliance and violations of the City Building Ordinances and the State Building Code. Performs related work as required. On call for structural Emergencies.
General Responsibilities:
- Inspecting structures for compliance with Rhode Island State Building codes.
- On occasion, fill in for Building Official in his absence.
- Responding to structural emergencies such as fire, vehicular damage and natural disasters.
- Perform minimum housing inspection for compliance with property maintenance code.
- Plan review of blue print for compliance with minimum building code standards.
- Makes reports for Building Official related to job description.
- Communicates with other Divisions such as; Engineering, Water Department, Sewer and Zoning, prior to issuance of permits for compliance with other requirements of said Divisions.
- Conduct Electrical, Plumbing or Mechanical Inspections if needed.
- Performs other duties assigned by the Building Official or Public Works Director.

- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the general public and coworkers.
- Ability to operate efficiently, effectively and work well under pressure.
- Knowledge of basic computer operation, specifically View Permit software.
- Occasional night, weekend and emergency availability.
- Ability to pass an in-depth background check.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must maintain certification as a Rhode Island State Certified Building Inspector/Official.
- Maintains appropriate records.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must obtain Building Official certification within one year.
- At least 5 years of responsible in-charge construction experience in the building trades.
- Graduation from a high school and completion of some courses in engineering or architecture or graduation from a technical institute with training in construction or engineering;
- Current Rhode Island certification or ICC certification as a Residential Inspector or Official.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five years’ experience in a Minimum Housing inspection or building inspection program; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the desired abilities, knowledges and skills.
- Multi-Disciplined certified inspector (Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical).
