Planning & Economic Development

The Department of Planning and Economic Development oversees land use planning, development project review, community development activities, economic development, administration of federal and state grant programs, housing and other planning related activities. The Department serves as staff to the East Providence Planning Board and  in addition, the Department also serves as staff to the City’s Economic Development Commission, Conservation Commission, Carousel Commission and Historic District Commission.

The Department is responsible for developing periodic updates to the Comprehensive Plan and the preparation of the City’s annual Capital Budget Program. The Department reviews all subdivisions, development plan review projects and land development projects submitted to the City with appropriate regulatory approval of the Planning Board, when appropriate. 

The Department of Planning and Economic Development staff includes the director, chief planner, principal planner, senior planner, planner I, and an administrative assistant.

The Community Development Office, which is part of the Department of Planning and Economic Development, is a federally funded Housing and Urban Development (HUD) entitlement community. Staff includes the director of community development, a rehabilitation inspector and an administrative assitant.

The office of Planning and Economic Development is located on the second floor of City Hall in Room 206.
