Laborer – Parks Division (Part Time and Seasonal)

Position: Laborer – Parks Division

Pay Rate: $16 per hour 

Summary: Under the general supervision of a Foreman (or other higher classified employees), the Laborer performs a wide variety of manual tasks in the maintenance and cleaning of City parks, fields and other property owned by the City. Duties include sweeping, cutting grass and brush, shoveling snow, emptying trash barrels. This is a part-time position with employment ending at the conclusion of the parks maintenance season.

General Responsibilities: A Laborer performs the following, but is not limited to:

  • Cutting grass, raking fields, weed whacking.
  • Emptying trash barrels and picking up debris in parks.
  • Maintaining athletic fields, painting field lines, opening and closing lights, unlocking gates, replacing basketball nets, and pumping fields after inclement weather.
  • Performs work for all areas of cultivation including but not limited to, aeration, seeding, fertilization, top dressing, raking, thatching.
  • Providing general maintenance of City property.
  • May be assigned to any area/division of the Department of Public Works as needed.
  • Performing related duties as required.

Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, and Skills 

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to keep routine records.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools. 
  • Ability to perform manual tasks under close and general supervision.
  • Ability to perform light and heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team to accomplish tasks.

Physical Requirements: Must be possess the following to perform demanding physical tasks:

  • Sufficient strength and dexterity to use hand and power landscaping equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move 40-50 lb. objects.
  • Ability to set up and take down equipment, traffic signs, barricades, and other City property.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must provide a BCI (Background Criminal Investigation). 
  • Must pass a physical and/or drug screening.
