EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – The City of East Providence Fire Department celebrated the promotion of 18 members of the fire service during a ceremony held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
While speaking to those in attendance, including those being promoted and their loved ones, Chief Michael Carey said, “Tonight is one of the most important traditions of the fire service. Promotions in our city are not simply about rank, but about responsibility, trust and continued commitment.”
“You are no longer responsible solely for your own performance; you are now responsible for others — their safety, their development, their success,” Chief Carey added.
As Mayor Bob DaSilva addressed the audience at the East Providence High School auditorium, his message focused on the administration’s priority of safety for the men and women of the East Providence Fire Department. He highlighted the purchase of four rescue vehicles, a tower ladder, two fire engines and four support vehicles, as well as an additional tower ladder truck and rescue truck that are in the process of being built. He also emphasized a first-of-its-kind safety measure aimed at protecting firefighters.
“I am so proud that, with Chief Carey’s leadership, the East Providence Fire Department is the first in the United States to fully equip our men and women with non-PFAS turnout gear departmentwide,” Mayor DaSilva said.
“I hope as you look at some of these investments, you understand that the greatest investment this city can make is in the people seated here today. We thank you for your commitment and dedication to this city,” DaSilva added.
City leaders also highlighted the sacrifices and dedication of the families of those in the fire service.
“To the families of those being promoted tonight, this achievement belongs to you as well,” Chief Carey said. “You have supported these individuals through long hours, stress and sacrifice. You have carried the weight of the profession alongside them. We thank you, and we recognize we cannot do this job without you.”
