Traffic Control Personnel

Summary: Under the supervision of a commanding officer of the East Providence Police Department, Traffic Control Personnel direct and manage traffic around areas such as work zones, busy intersections, and construction sites to ensure the safety of workers, motorists, and pedestrians. Traffic Control Personnel fill vacancies as needed daily. Thereby, employees are not guaranteed a minimum amount of work hours per week. Traffic Control Personnel are not affiliated with a professional union and must maintain consistent availability, performance, and training to continue to be eligible for employment.

General Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates with drivers, pedestrians, construction crews, emergency services, and other traffic control personnel using hand signals or communication devices to guide traffic effectively.
  • Uses standardized flagging signals or signs to instruct drivers when to stop, slow down, or proceed with caution.
  • Sets up, maintains, and removes traffic control equipment such as signs and cones.
  • Follows local traffic laws, regulations, and site-specific traffic control plans to ensure compliance and safety.
  • Responds to sudden traffic changes or emergencies as needed to maintain safety.
  • Reports any potential safety hazards or incidents to the designated site supervisor for immediate resolution.
  • Attends and completes training on the latest traffic control practices and technologies.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and protocols such as found in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of applicable traffic laws and regulations.
  • Ability to retain a professional demeanor in emergency situations.
  • Experience working with the public.  

Position Requirements:

  • Must complete training in safe traffic control practices and public contact techniques.
  • Must obtain a certificate of satisfactory completion from a training course approved by the Department of Transportation (following an offer of employment).
  • Must complete, on an annual basis, a required in-service training program authorized by the East Providence Police Department.
  • Must complete a background check and present a Criminal Background Check (BCI) (following an offer of employment).
  • Must pass a physical exam, physical back screen and drug screen test (following an offer of employment).
  • Must remain drug free and be subject to random drug screen tests.

Minimum Application Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

Pay Rate: $30/per hour
