Pound Keeper (Part-Time)

$17 per hour (no benefits)

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor, the Pound Keeper (Part-Time) performs a variety of tasks related to the care of the animals at the East Providence Animal Shelter. The Pound Keeper (Part-Time) feeds and waters animals, keeps the shelter clean and in orderly condition, and provides treatment (as directed by a veterinarian) to sick or injured impounded animals. Working with the general public, the Pound Keeper (Part-Time) facilitates the animal adoption process. In providing consistent care to animals, the Pound Keeper (Part-Time) will be required to work some weekends and performs related duties as directed

  • Feeding and watering animals at the facility.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting runs and cages.
  • Washing all areas of the facility.
  • Removing rubbish.
  • Replenishing and maintaining stock, and general housekeeping.
  • Assisting with the adoption process for animals at the facility.
  • Performs related duties as directed.

  • Reliable in attendance at work and flexible in availability to work.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of safety principals related to the handling of animals.
  • Ability to work in a positive way with co-workers and members of the public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in regard to the safety or people and animals.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Experience handling animals and cleaning facilities (preferred).
  • Candidate will be required to pass a BCI (background check).
  • Candidate is required to pass a physical, back, and drug screening.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in and clean contained areas such as dog kennels. 
  • Ability to physically handle animals of various sizes.
  • Ability to carry food and supplies related to the functions of the animal control division.
