Job Description: Under the supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Assistant Fleet Manager performs skilled work on City vehicles and provides administrative services for the division. As a mechanic, the Assistant Fleet Manager repairs and maintains gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as police cars, fire trucks, rescue vehicles, 5 ton or larger dump trucks, pickup trucks, heavy construction equipment and tractors. As an administrator of the division, the Assistant Fleet Manager maintains operations of the department by prioritizing and distributing work assignments, overseeing the completion of work in a timely manner, processing bills and invoices, monitoring and maintaining inventory, and completing paperwork.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Repairs and maintains City vehicles.
- Utilizes software and apps to maintain and service City vehicles trains personnel on the
- use of the system.
- Assists with implementation and training of vehicle maintenance for personnel.
- Assists with the preparation and creation of annual budget data and documents.
- Maintains budget expenditures.
- Process department payroll and perform general office duties.
- Maintains city vehicle maintenance records and monthly billing of departmental
- expenditures.
- Prepares information for Rhode Island DEM reports.
- Assists with purchasing supplies, equipment, and gas/diesel products.
- Assists with safety training and monitors practices and protocols of personnel repairing
- and using City vehicles.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Abilities:
- Ability to operate City vehicles, including construction equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment of
- the automotive and heavy equipment mechanical trade.
- Skilled in locating and correcting defects in gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and
- equipment used in municipal operations.
- Possession of industry specific certification(s).
- Knowledge of computer platforms and systems used in the management of the division.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Skilled in the use of care of standard tools and equipment of the trade.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or trade school (or equivalent) supplemented with
- documented technical training in the trade.
- Five years’ experience in truck (5 ton or better) and heavy equipment repair and
- maintenance, including work on a variety of diesel engines.
- Rhode Island Commercial Driver’s License Class B with air brake endorsement.
- Rhode Island State Inspection license.
- Must have own tools.
