Animal Control Supervisor

Description: Under the general supervision of the Uniform Patrol Division Commander of the East Providence Police Department, the Animal Control Supervisor provides leadership of the Animal Control Division and performs a variety of animal control tasks. In the supervisory capacity, the Animal Control Supervisor prepares work schedules for animal control officers and pound keepers, assigns appropriate tasks, and completes appropriate documentation. In the animal control capacity, the Animal Control Supervisor catches stray animals, investigates complaints, collects and disposes of dead animals, and issues summons to violators of city ordinances, and related tasks. The Animal Control Supervisor is required to work on some weekends and holidays in order to maintain the functions of the division.
General Responsibilities:
- Serves as the supervisor of the Animal Control Division.
- Follows laws, ordinances, and regulations related to animal control.
- Prepares work schedules and assigns tasks for animal control officers, pound keepers, staff, and volunteers.
- Catches stray animals.
- Investigates complaints related to animals.
- Collects and disposes of dead animals.
- Issues summons to violators of city ordinances.
- Supervises and performs cleaning and maintenance as required.
- Supervises and performs the feeding and watering of impounded animals.
- Transports animals to veterinarian for treatment or euthanasia.
- Prepares statistics and reports as required.
- Testifies in court if required.
- Reports for overtime during animal-related emergencies
- Performs related work as requested by the Chief of Police or the Uniform Patrol Division Commander.
- Engages with and educates the general public about the functions of the Animal Control Division.
Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral direction and to keep records and make reports.
- Ability to use office productivity software such as Microsoft Office 365 and software platforms used to record and process information related to animal control.
- Ability to direct, supervise and instruct Animal Control personnel.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement in completing assignments.
- Knowledge of state law, city ordinances, regulations, practices and procedures related to the control, health, and safety of animals.
- Sincere interest in the welfare of people and animals.
- Ability to respond appropriately to public inquiries and requests.
- Detailed knowledge of State Law as it pertains to Animal Control.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in and clean contained areas such as dog kennels.
- Ability to physically handle animals of various sizes.
- Ability to carry food and supplies related to the functions of the animal control division.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Graduation from a high school or an equivalent degree.
- A minimum of 5 years professional experience working with animals.
- Demonstrated leadership in a professional setting.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Certification as an Animal Control Officer (preferred).
