Job Description: Under the supervision of the Circulation Coordinator, the Library Aide performs support duties at all East Providence Public Library locations. The Library Aide provides customer service, performs circulation duties, provides assistance in other departments, and performs other tasks as assigned. Library Aide is a 35 hour per week position and includes up to two (2) evenings per week and alternating Saturdays.

General Responsibilities:

  • Welcomes library patrons and guests. 
  • Assists patrons with library services and resources, promotes library programs, and directs patrons to specific library materials.
  • Performs circulation duties including check-in/check-out, issuing new library cards, processing collections, locating materials online and in the library, retrieving materials, answering the phone, and handling the routing of library materials to and from other libraries.
  • Keeps shelves and displays in order.
  • Assists patrons with booking public meeting spaces, registering for programs, and accessing other library services.
  • Assists in the organization of inventory by preparing book carts, shelving materials, and cleaning materials as needed.
  • Respects patron privacy and safeguards confidential information.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.

Desirable Abilities, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Reliable, organized, accurate, and pays close attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of online platforms and databases such as Ocean State Libraries, KOHA, Google Suite, and Microsoft 365.
  • Possesses a positive attitude and the ability to work effectively as part of a team with other members of the library staff.
  • Applies independent judgment when necessary.
  • Proficient in the use of printers, photocopiers, fax machines, scanners, and other technology.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. 
  • 1-3 years in a customer service or clerical role (previous library experience preferred), or an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the desired abilities, knowledge, and skills.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform physical tasks associated with library work, including:

  • Lifting and transporting books.
  • Maneuvering a book cart.
  • Shelving and retrieving books at or above shoulder height, and at floor level.
