Under the general direction of a supervisor or lead worker, the Auto Equipment Operator II (AEO-II) performs duties in the Department of Public Works. The AEO-II operates complex automotive equipment such as front-end loaders, low-boy tractor trailers, large backhoes, bulldozers, jet/vac trucks, graders, street sweepers, and ten-wheel trucks. In the absence of a supervisor or lead worker, the AEO-II may oversee a project crew at a work site. When not operating or servicing automotive equipment, the AEO-II performs general manual labor. The AEO-II operates sanding and snow-plowing equipment, must be available for extensive overtime during emergencies.
General Responsibilities: The Auto Equipment Operator II performs the following, but is not limited to:
- Operates complex automotive equipment such as front-end loaders, low boy tractor trailers, large backhoes, bulldozers, jet/vac trucks, graders, street sweepers, and ten-wheel trucks.
- Operates landscaping, snow removal, and sanding vehicles and equipment.
- Performs general maintenance and service on equipment.
- Performs manual labor.
- May be assigned to any division of the Department of Public Works on an acting or emergency basis as needed.
- Responds to weather or service-related emergencies outside of regular working hours.
- Performs related work as required.
Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, and Skills
- Ability to operate complex automotive equipment such as front-end loaders, low boy tractor trailers, large backhoes, bulldozers, jet/vac trucks, graders, street sweepers, and ten-wheel trucks.
- Ability to lead a small project crew at a work site.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to keep routine records.
- Ability to solve problems related to the services of the Department of Public Works.
- Proficiency in the use of hand tools.
- Ability to perform semiskilled and skilled manual tasks.
- Ability to perform light and heavy manual labor.
- Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team to accomplish tasks.
Physical Requirements: Must possess the following to perform demanding physical tasks:
- Ability to operate heavy automotive equipment.
- Sufficient strength and dexterity to use landscaping and construction equipment.
- Ability to lift and move 40-50 lb. objects.
- Ability to set up and take down equipment, and load and unload vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education equivalent to completion of high school, or 3 to 5 years of experience performing manual labor in the construction field.
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform physical work.
- Possession of a RI Hoisting Engineer’s License for loader and backhoe
- Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (with air-brake endorsement)
EXAMINATION WEIGHT*
Performance testing 50 %
Oral 50%
*Candidates must successfully pass the performance testing to advance to oral examination and continue in the process.
