Under the general direction of a supervisor or leadworker, the Auto Equipment Operator (AEO-I) performs duties in the Department of Public Works. The AEO-I operates both light auto equipment and trucks (panel, platform, and dump with a capacity exceeding five (5) tons), transports road materials, and hauls refuse, equipment, and construction materials. The AEO-I also operates lawn equipment, sands, and operates a snowplow. Assignments may be received in detail for each job to be performed or work may follow an established routine. When not operating or servicing equipment, the AEO-I performs general manual labor. The AEO-I must be available for extensive overtime during weather and service-related emergencies.

 

General Responsibilities: The Auto Equipment Operator I performs the following, but is not limited to:

  • Operates panel, platform, and dump trucks with a capacity exceeding five (5) tons.
  • Transports maintenance and construction materials.
  • Hauls refuse and construction debris.
  • Operates landscaping, snow removal, sanding, raking, and grading vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates a backhoe to load vehicles.
  • Performs general maintenance and service on equipment.
  • Performs manual labor.
  • May be assigned to any division of the Department of Public Works on an acting or emergency basis as needed.
  • Responds to weather or service-related emergencies outside of regular working hours.
  • Performs related work as required.

Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Ability to operate panel, platform, and dump trucks with a capacity exceeding five (5) tons.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to keep routine records.
  • Ability to solve problems related to the services of the Department of Public Works.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools.
  • Ability to perform semiskilled and skilled manual tasks.
  • Ability to perform light and heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team to accomplish tasks.

Physical Requirements: Must possess the following to perform demanding physical tasks:

  • Sufficient strength and dexterity to use landscaping and construction equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move 40-50 lb. objects.
  • Ability to set up and take down equipment, and load and unload vehicles.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to completion of high school, or 3 to 5 years of experience performing manual labor in the construction field.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform physical work.
  • Possession of a RI Hoisting Engineer’s License for loader and backhoe
  • Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (with air-brake endorsement)

 

EXAMINATION WEIGHT*

Performance testing 50 %

Oral 50%

 

*Candidates must successfully pass the performance testing to advance to oral examination and continue in the process.
