Under general direction of a Labor Supervisor or Leadworker, operates complex auto equipment such as backhoe, and 10-wheeler trucks.  Also operates panel, platform, or dump truck with a capacity generally exceeding five (5) tons in transporting road materials or hauling refuse, and construction materials. When not operating or servicing automotive equipment, performs general manual labor as required as well as sanding and snow plowing.  Performs related work as required.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Knowledgeable on excavation safety and work zone safety in public roads. Reports directly to the Labor Supervisor and/or Leadworker. Prepares reports as required. Assists in Division planning and maintenance activities. Performs work including but not limited to flushing, valve exercising, metering, backflow, and others as directed. Available for emergencies and work outside normal working hours. Must be available for extensive overtime during all types of emergency situations

Ability to interact with other City Departments & regulatory agencies

Excellent written & oral communication & coordination skills

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR APPOINTMENT

 

Graduate from a standard high school. Minimum three to five years’ experience within a water utility and performing manual and semiskilled tasks in municipal public works, public utility or construction field; some experience in the operation of a dump truck with a capacity exceeding five (5) tons; must possess a valid RI Commercial Driver’s License Class B with air brake endorsement; must have a RI Hoisting Engineer’s License for loader/backhoe; some supervisory experience, as may have been gained in an acting Leadworker capacity;  or any combination of experience and training which provides the desired abilities, knowledge and skills. Must obtain within (12) twelve months of employment and maintain State of Rhode Island Water System Operator Certification Transmission and Distribution 1. Must present a clean and professional appearance/attitude. Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally.
