Internship Opportunity

The City of East Providence Department of Planning & Economic Development is currently seeking qualified individuals to assist city staff with conducting a comprehensive inventory of the City’s street trees this summer. Candidates should be enthusiastic and hardworking individuals who are passionate about trees, urban forestry, and the environment. Under the guidance of Planning Department staff, the intern will conduct field work both independently and as part of a team, alongside community volunteers working with the neighborhood-based citizens group EP Urban Forest. The City is conducting a tree inventory this year for the first time since 2006-2007 in order to collect baseline data on the current size, stock, and health of the urban forest. This will provide critical data for developing a city forestry management plan and identifying priority areas for future tree planting programs.

Job Description

Successful candidates will be responsible for collection of data on street trees including species, size, overall health/condition, and location using field survey software (training provided). This will be a hands-on position working in the field most days. The candidate will also assist Planning Department staff with volunteer management, data management, and other administrative tasks in the office related to the tree inventory.
The work day will be Mon-Fri 8am-4pm. This is a seasonal position and will be paid an hourly rate of $15/hr. The selected candidate will work 35 hours per week, for seven weeks, with an anticipated start date in June 2021.

Qualifications

College level coursework or equivalent experience in urban forestry, ecology, botany, horticulture, plant biology, arboriculture, landscape design, environmental science, geography, or a related field is preferred. Skills in tree and woody plant identification, basic field botany, and/or dendrology is strongly desired. Ability to read a map is essential.
Successful candidates must be proficient with using a Windows computer and an iPad, and have working knowledge of Google Maps and MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with Filemaker Pro and/or ArcGIS is a plus.
Written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is ability to work quickly with attention to detail.
Ability and willingness to work independently and as part of a team is required.
Candidates must have a valid driver’s license.
Physical demands: must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time, up to several miles a day. Must be able and willing to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
