FAQ - Disposal of Items

How to dispose of yard waste, appliances and other items:

 

Antifreeze - Please deposit in a container labeled for antifreeze only at Dept. of Public Works yard, located at 60 Commerical Way. 

Appliances - Picked up curbside, one Saturday per month. Residents must purchase a $25 recycling sticker (stickers can be purchased at the Public Works Office located at 60 Commercial Way) by 10 a.m. on the preceding Thursday to scheduled collection. Appliances may be placed at the curb for collection not more than 24 hours in advance.   Appliance can also be dropped off at the Public Works yard.

Auto Batteries - Car batteries can be left near the oil igloo at the Dept. of Pubic Works yard.

Books - Drop off at Dept. of Public Works yard or one of the drop off containers located at the following locations in the City:

  •  St. Francis Xavier Church 81 North Carpenter St.
  •  American Legion 850 Willett Ave.

Bulky Rigid Plastic - Includes old trash barrels, Little Tykes toys, coolers, milkcrates, lawn furniture, etc. No PVC vinyl.  Drop off at Dept. of Public Works yard.

Bulky Waste - Bulky items and furniture are collected every Friday for the entire city one item per houseshold per week by appointment only.  Items need to be left at the curb the night before collection, please call 401-435-7701 to schedule an appointment.  Cut off time to schedule bulky item pickup each week is noon time on Thursday.  If usable, try to recycle old furniture. Call Furniture Bank of RI 401-831-5511, or other charitable organization for donation.    

Carpeting/Rugs - One item per week placed at curb call office to schedule bulky item pickup.  This includes rugs cut to 4', rolled and tied.

Christmas Trees - Christmas trees are recycled in our chip-a-tree program.  Residents can drop off trees at local neighborhood playgrounds/parks after Christmas.  Trees are collected curbside in January please check press release for current years collection dates.   Trees are collected by city crews for the annual Chip-A-Tree program, not the trash contractor.

Clothing/Textiles - Please recycle items by bringing to one of the City's KIDUCATION clothing/textile collection boxes.  Locations:

  • Agwam Parking Lot
  • Carousel Parking lot. 
  • Fuller Library 260 Dover. Ave. 
  • Community Center 1320 Pawtucket Ave. Rumford
  • Walgreen's  Warren Ave.

Construction & Demolition Debris - Residents are responsible for the disposal of all materials associated with household construction, demolition and renovation activities regardless of who is doing the work or when it took place. Construction debris can be taken to the landfill in Johnston 401-942-1430.  Residents can also call private collectors for disposal. Fees apply.

Cooking Oil - Residents may now bring used cooking oil to the Public Works yard. Look for the blue collection container provided by Newport Biodiesel. The cooking oil is processed into biodiesel at their Rhode Island facility.

E-waste - Drop off at Public Works yard.  What is accepted: TVs, CRT monitors, CPUs and all other items such as printers, cartridges, wire and cable, VHS/DVD players and anything with a plug, including hair dryers, blenders and toasters, etc.

Extra Recycling - Households that find that they are filling their single recycling cart on a weekly basis may submit a request to purchase a second cart. Call the Recycling Office for more information. Residents with an abundance of cardboard, such as moving boxes, etc may bring flattened cardboard to the Publc Works yard and place in the cardboard-only dumpster.

Leaf & Yard Waste - Yard debris is collected in paper bags or barrels with yard debris labels. Yard waste labels are available at City Hall, Engineering Division and Public Works Office at 60 Commercial Way M-F 8 a.m. -3 p.m..  Yard waste is collected April 1-December 15.

Mattresses & Box Springs - Mattress and/or box spring, two pieces or one set, per household are collected on scheduled Saturday’s by appointment only.  Fee for curbside collection is $25 each piece.  Residents can schedule a pick-up by calling the Recycling Office at 401-435-7701.  Mattress collections can be scheduled during the months of March through December.  No collections in January and February.  Free mattress and box spring drop offs will be available for the months of March through December.  Please call the office for schedule to check website for updates.   Mattresses can also be dropped off at Rhode Island Resource Recovery throughout the year at 60 Shun Pike in Johnston at no fee, as long as mattress is not torn or damaged it can be recycled follow signs for the small vehicle drop off area, call 942-1430 for more information. 

Motor Oil & Filters - Please deposit only uncontaminated used motor oil in the oil Igloo at the Public Works yard.  Oil filters can be left here in designated barrels. 

Paper for Shredding - Free at yearly city events, call the Recycling Office for details. 

Propane Tanks - Propane tanks of all sizes from small camping tanks to grill tanks can be dropped off at the Public Works yard. 

Scrap Metal - Small items such as metal hangers, pots and pans, chains and larger items including appliances can be dropped off at the Public Works yard.

Tires - Local tire business will accept tires for a nominal fee.
