Position: Planning Department Intern – City Trees Project

Department: Planning & Economic Development

Varied Hours; April 2026 – August 2026

Pay Range: $2250 Stipend / No Benefits / Grant Funded – Seasonal Position 

Summary: Under the Supervision of a Senior Planner and Supervisors of the Parks Department, the Planning Department Intern performs work related to the Tree Equity and Workforce Education Program (City Trees Project). The Planning Department Intern plants, maintains, and catalogues trees throughout the City. 

General Responsibilities: The following serve as examples of the responsibilities of the position and are not intended to be a comprehensive and limited list.

• Plants, waters, and maintains trees in areas throughout the City.
• Enters and maintains tree-related data in the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS).
• Researches planting areas and ideal tree species for each site.
• Performs related duties as required.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Positive attitude and ability to learn quickly.
• Interest in learning about trees, urban forestry, and community planning.

Minimum Requirements:

• Coursework in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related discipline.
• Experience using office productivity software like Microsoft Office.
• Must be able to perform physical work such as digging, lifting, and watering.
• Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
