Job Description: Under the supervision of ranking officers, police officers protect life and property, enforce criminal and traffic laws and local ordinances, conduct investigations, and perform related work as required.

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be 21 years of age by the start of the Academy.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Must be a United States Citizen
• Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
• Must have the ability to speak, read and write the English language
• Must have the ability to pass a physical examination given by a physician, a physical fitness/agility examination, a written examination, an oral examination, a swim proficiency test, a drug screen, a psychological examination given by a psychological test center, and a comprehensive background investigation

Examination Weight:

• 60% Written / 40% Oral
• The minimum passing score required on both examinations shall be 70 points. Candidates who are current East Providence residents may receive one point for each consecutive year of residency up to a maximum of five points.
• Candidates who are veterans of the Armed Services may receive four points, or five points for a post-9/11 veteran-candidate, up to a maximum of five points.

APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A VALID FIT2SERVE PHYSICAL AND WRITTEN TEST. CERTIFICATES MUST BE DATED NO EARLIER THAN 12/01/24.  CERTIFICATES CAN BE SUBMITED PRIOR TO THE APPLICATION DEADLINE OR UPON REQUEST TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE HIRING PROCESS. 

The East Providence Police Department reserves the right to conduct its own physical and written tests. As such, the East Providence Physical and Written exam will be conducted during the first two weeks of December. Exact date will be determined later. All applicants without a valid Fit2Serve test, must schedule and complete our tests.

**$5,000 New officer bonus will be paid to the officer in the following manner:
The City of East Providence will pay the police officer $2500 upon completion of the probation period for new police officers.
The City of East Providence will pay the police officer $1500 upon completion of 2 years of service.
The City of East Providence will pay the police officer $1000 upon completion of 3 years of service.
