Welder Fabricator

Starting Salary: $57,495 (Pay Grade 36)

Summary: Under the supervision of the Fleet Manager, the Welder and Fabricator performs welding and fabrication work in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles such as cars, trucks, and heavy construction equipment. Using traditional and contemporary tools of the trade, the Welder and Fabricator cuts, shapes, and assembles metal parts according to specifications, sketches, or blueprints. The Welder and Fabricator performs related skilled work as required in support of the Department of Public Works. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Welding in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles such as cars, trucks, and heavy construction equipment. 
  • Cutting, shaping, and assembling and fabrications of metal parts. 
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and blueprints to determine project requirements and specifications. 
  • Operating and maintaining welding equipment and tools and ensuring they are in safe working condition. 
  • Inspecting and test finishing products for defects, ensuring they meet industry standards and department requirements. 
  • Working with other team members to complete projects on time and within budget. 
  • Providing updates on progress to supervisors and team members. 
  • Collaborating with supervisors and employees within the Department of Public Works to provide City services and maintain City equipment and property. 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Proficiency in using welding equipment and tools, as well as a strong understanding of fabrication processes. 
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and tools. 
  • Ability to select materials, such as metals and alloys, according to specifications. 
  • Knowledge of safety standards and practices. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with supervisors and other employees. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to regularly lift 30-50 pounds. 
  • Ability to regularly perform repetitive tasks. 
  • Possess manual dexterity to put parts or pieces together accurately. 
  • Ability to manipulate and move machines, equipment, and parts. 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or a related professional program. 
  • Five years’ professional experience in welding, including electric arc welding, octylene welding and cutting, brazing and soldering, or any acceptable combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities.
