Firefighter/EMT

Salary: $62,739 - $74,951

Summary: A Firefighter/EMT performs skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; in rendering medical assistance at medical and other emergency scenes; and in operating and maintaining Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and work environment.

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be at least 21 years of age by January 1st, 2026. 
• Must be a United States Citizen and furnish a birth certificate or certificate of naturalization.
• Must possess and furnish a copy of valid driver’s license.
• Must possess a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
• Successful completion of the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs written examination and Physical Performance Assessment (PPA)
• A PPA will be sponsored by the East Providence Fire Department for any candidates that require it 
• Applicants who have a valid PPA certification at the time of the application deadline will not need to re-take the PPA. (Upload PPA certification on Firefighterapp.com.)
• Must be able to obtain Rhode Island Emergency Medical Technician A-EMTC Certification within one year of employment.

Examination Weight:

• 60% Written/40% Oral
• The minimum passing score required on both examinations shall be 70 points.
• Current resident candidates may receive one point for each consecutive year that such candidate has been a resident of the city up to a maximum of five points. Veteran-candidates may receive four points. Post-9/11 veteran-candidates may receive five points. Any additional qualifying points will be added to the written exam score only if a passing grade of 70 is achieved.
