The Teen Services Librarian is responsible for providing excellent library service to youth in grades 6-12 (ages 11-19). The position is responsible for planning, promoting, and implementing programs and services for middle and high school students as well as for parent and teacher groups. The individual for this position is a forward thinker and an enthusiastic advocate for teens.
Works under the direction of the Youth Services Coordinator. Provides desk coverage in both the adult and children’s areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Develops and conducts varied services and programs for middle and high school students that reflect current trends and community needs
- Responsible for collection development for materials aimed at middle through high school students, specifically utilizing knowledge of emerging trends and community needs to advocate for materials by underrepresented communities to address the need for more representation of marginalized groups in the library’s collection
- Provides and coordinates meaningful community service opportunities for middle and high school students
- Facilitate a smooth transition for children into teen services
- Performs reference services and technical assistance for adults, teens, and children
- Provides reader advisory services for kids in grades 6-12, middle and high school teachers, and community organizations
- Is familiar with teen users of the library and establishes a good rapport
- Sustains an active online presence through the library’s website and social media
- Maintains welcoming and inviting physical teen areas and virtual library environment that supports enjoyable and productive use of library resources
- Act as a liaison with other agencies in the community serving young adults
- Recruit and supervise teen interns
- Provides visits to the public and private middle and high schools in East Providence
- Identify service area gaps and implement outreach strategies to connect with nonusers
- Participates in professional library activities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- American Library Association accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Services, but GSLIS students are encouraged to apply
- Coursework in YA Librarianship and/or experience working with teens
- Experience in a public library preferred
DESIRABLE ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Strong knowledge of young adult literature
- Ability to think creatively, innovate, and generate forward-looking ideas
- Must be able to prioritize and focus in a busy environment while being able to work cooperatively with the public, volunteers, staff, other city departments, and community partners
- Excellent customer service and oral/written communication skills
- The ability to integrate current and emerging technologies
- Must be able to travel between locations
- Be able to work at least one evening a week and alternating Saturdays
