City of East Providence to hold Hazardous Mitigation Plan public meeting

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – City of East Providence to hold Hazard Mitigation Plan public informational meeting.

The purpose of the public informational meeting is to inform the Council, City residents and business owners of the city’s 2022 Hazard Mitigation Plan update.

The Hazard Mitigation Plan details natural hazards that are a threat to the City and outlines actions that the City can take to minimize the impact of these hazards to our constituents including loss of life and loss of property. This is achieved by identifying risks and vulnerabilities that are common in the city.

The meeting will be held during the East Providence City Council on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021 and will be held in the Council Chambers at 145 Taunton Ave.

“Having a Hazard Mitigation Plan in place is imperative in order to mitigate disaster damage and reconstruction,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “In addition, having a FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan is required in order for East Providence to be eligible for various FEMA grants, participation in the National Flood Insurance Program, and a federal program which achieves discounts on federal flood insurance for policyholders.”

As part of the planning process, the City is soliciting public input regarding the reduction of the City’s vulnerability to natural hazards. These include flooding, severe thunderstorms, major winter storms, hurricanes, excessive heat, coastal erosion, sea-level rise, and more. Please join us to learn more and to provide your input on hazard mitigation planning goals and risk-reduction ideas for East Providence.

“We encourage our residents to join us to learn more and to provide input on hazard mitigation planning goals and risk-reduction ideas for East Providence,” DaSilva added.

The 2017 Hazard Mitigation Plan is available for review and inspection in the Department of Planning, Room 309, City Hall, 145 Taunton Ave., East Providence, RI (M-F 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), and is also posted on the city’s website here: https://eastprovidenceri.gov/departments/emergency-management
