Community Development
The Community Development Office, which is part of the Planning and Economic Development Department, is federally funded. Its mission is to identify priority needs for East Providence neighborhoods through community input, relevant studies, plans and data. It then identifies and secures resources to help address those needs.
An annual Block Grant is awarded to the City of East Providence by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). The Community Development office’s duties are to allocate these funds according to HUD Regulations after they have been presented to the City Council and approved. We use these funds to financially assist various projects, agencies and programs throughout the City. The City also receives program funds from previous grants for its Housing Improvement Program that help low to moderate income families in East Providence to rehabilitate their homes for a safe and healthy environment.
Between 2015 and 2019 the Community Development Division has:
- Awarded $3,553,549 in Community Development Block Grant funds
- Provided $340,270 in non-Community Development Block Grant funds
- Provided public services to 25,989 people
- Renovated 52 homes
- Created 56 jobs
