Description: Under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager, The Automotive Mechanic I performs skilled work in repair and maintenance of the City fleet of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment such as police cars, fire trucks, rescue vehicles, dump trucks, pickup trucks, heavy construction equipment, and tractors.
General Responsibilities: The general responsibilities listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. - Repairs and reconditions equipment such as automobiles, police cars, pickup trucks, 5 ton and larger dump trucks, heavy construction equipment (i.e. backhoes, front end loaders, dozers, graders, ten wheelers), stationary generators, tractors, fire trucks, rescue vehicles, cement mixers, power lawn mowers, pumps and other specialized gasoline or diesel-powered equipment.
- Performs such tasks as facing, grinding, and seating valves; setting tappets and push rods; replacing or repairing main or connecting rod bearings; inspecting and repairing transmissions, universal joints, differentials, and rear ends; cleaning, repairing and adjusting carburetors; adjusting and relining brakes; overhauling engines, timing motors, repairing and adjusting spark plugs, ignition points, distributors, coils, generators, lights and batteries.
- Cleans and polishes automobiles.
- Performs grease jobs.
- Inspects and inflates tires, and changes and repairs tires and tubes.
- Operates and road tests specified equipment as needed.
Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Knowledge of electronic engine controls and systems.
- Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment of the automotive and heavy equipment mechanical trade (certification preferred).
- Skilled in locating and correcting defects in gasoline and diesel-powered equipment used in municipal operations.
- Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and diagrams.
- Ability to work both independently and part of a team of mechanics.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Skilled in the use and care of standard tools and equipment of the trade.
Physical Requirements:
- Fine motor skills and dexterity necessary to manipulate hand tools and equipment.
- Ability to lift and use heavy tools like hoists and jacks.
- Ability to work on physical tasks for long periods of time.
- Ability to work in tight, cramped, or confined spaces.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Documented education or training from a trade school or professional organization.
- Five year’s professional experience repairing and maintenance of trucks (5 ton or more), heavy equipment, and diesel engines.
- Must have own tools.
- Must possess a valid Rhode Island Commercial Driver’s license Class B with air brake endorsement (within one year of start date).
- Must possess a Rhode Island State Inspection license.
- An equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the desired abilities, knowledge and skills.
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a physical, back & drug screen
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a BCI (Background Criminal Investigation)
