RI mosquito report: Mosquito samples collected in Newport, East Providence, Pawtucket, and Providence on September 8 have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). The current risk level for WNV remains high statewide. No signs of EEE, Jamestown Canyon Virus, or additional WNV were found in other samples statewide.
WNV is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the U.S. While most people don’t get sick, about 1 in 5 may develop fever and other symptoms. There is no vaccine or specific treatment.
Protect yourself from mosquito bites:
• Use EPA-approved insect repellent
• Wear long sleeves and long pants
• Eliminate standing water around your home
• Avoid outdoor activities during dawn and dusk
