East Providence Establishes E-Bike Ban Across City Parks and Recreation Areas

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – On Tuesday, June 2nd, the East Providence City Council gave final passage to the ban of operation of electric bicycles in city parks, recreation spaces and sidewalks.

“East Providence’s parks and recreational spaces are some of our city’s most treasured community assets, providing residents and families a safe place to walk, play, exercise and enjoy the beautiful outdoor spaces across our city,” Mayor Bob DaSilva said. “This ordinance is about protecting the safety of all of our residents and making sure that we continue to maintain the welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere at our parks and recreational spaces,” DaSilva added.

The ordinance was sponsored by Council President Bob Rodericks, Council Vice President Frank Rego, and Ward 3 Councilman Frank Fogarty. Prior to its adoption, the ordinance underwent a public engagement process that allowed community members to provide feedback and recommendations.

With collaboration from the community, language was tweaked to put a clause into the ordinance for first time offenses to receive a $100 fine, a second offense receiving a $250 fine and third and subsequent offenses receiving a $500 fine and the temporary impoundment of the e-bike subject to a forfeiture hearing.

Additionally, owners found responsible for any damage and destruction of city owned property caused by the operation of the e-bike, will be responsible for damages.

As East Providence continues to be a vibrant, welcoming and transportation friendly community, greatly valuing the input and dedicated members of our bicycle community, the city has created the Mayors Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee to continue to work together to make East Providence the best place to live, learn, work and play.
