CITY OF EAST PROVIDENCE Firefighter Recruitment 2024

Firefighter/EMT - $62,739 - $74,951 Per CBA

Perform skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; in rendering medical assistance at medical and other emergency scenes; and in operating and maintaining Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and work environment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age by January 1st, 2025.
  • Must be a United States Citizen and furnish a birth certificate or certificate of naturalization.
  • Must possess and furnish a copy of valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Successful completion of the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs written examination and Physical Performance Assessment (PPA)
  • A PPA will be sponsored by the East Providence Fire Department for any candidates that require it 
  • Applicants who have a valid PPA certification at the time of the application deadline will not need to re-take the PPA.

  • Must be able to obtain Rhode Island Emergency Medical Technician A-EMTC Certification within one year of employment.

 

EXAMINATION WEIGHT

60% Written

40% Oral

The minimum passing score required on both examinations shall be 70 points.

Current resident candidates may receive one point for each consecutive year that such candidate has been a resident of the city up to a maximum of five points. Veteran-candidates may receive four points. Post-9/11 veteran-candidates may receive five points. Any additional qualifying points will be added to the written exam score only if a passing grade of 70 is achieved.

The RI Association of Fire Chiefs (RIAFC) will be administering a written exam for East Providence Fire
Department applicants ONLY. There will be NO COST for this exam. If you have already taken the RIAFC
written exam, and it is still within the eligibility period, we can accept your score. You may also re-test if
you wish to try and improve upon your score. *** If using an existing score, upload your RIAFC written

RI Firefighter Physical Performance Assessment (PPA) Certification

The City of East Providence will host a PPA session with the RIAFC. This is for EPFD applicants ONLY.
Applicants who have a valid PPA certification at the time of the application deadline will not need to re-take the PPA.

There will be NO COST for this PPA Session. You will be notified when to register. Registration will be
through the City of East Providence Human Resources Department.

All candidates are required to bring a driver's license and a completed "PRE-PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT MEDICAL EXAMINATION" form on the day of the PPA session.

Post-Employment Rhode Island A-EMTC Requirement

Oral Panel Interview – Week of April 1st, 2024

Swim Test and Ladder Test (TBA) ONLY candidates who successfully pass the PPA, written exam, and oral interview will take part in the Swim & Ladder Tests.

Eligible qualified applicants must score seventy (70) points or higher on both the written and oral portions, pass each phase of the process, and obtain all necessary certifications by the specified deadlines in order to be considered for employment.

East Providence Fire Academy Training is scheduled to begin on August 26, 2024. 

Candidates for firefighter must be able to meet established educational, physical and medical requirements.  Trainees must pass all City of East Providence Fire Academy curriculum and obtain all necessary certifications and/or licenses by specified deadlines as required by the Fire Department for
