Information on Applying for Water Service

 

Procedure for new residential service installations 3/4-inch to 2-inch:

  1. Fill out a water service application, application checklist and sketch/diagram of new water service installation. Completed application packages can be dropped off at  the Water Utilities Division located within the East Providence Public Works complex at 60 Commercial Way East Providence, RI 02914 or can be emailed to waterdept@eastprovidenceri.gov
  2. Receive Water Utilities Division approval for new water service and pay new service installation fees.
  3. Acquire all necessary City and State permits. 
  4. Notify the Water Utilities Division 48 hours prior to installation of the "Customer Owned" side of the water service (from building to property line) for inspection. 
  5. Notify the Water Utilities Division when the property is ready for water service - the Water Utilities Division will connect the property and install water meter(s).
  6. The Water Utilities Division does not perform new service installation work on State of Rhode Island maintained roads. In the case a new service is proposed on a State of Rhode Island maintained road, the property owner will need to acquire the services of an appropriate underground utility contractor to connect the water service to the water distribution system.

 

Procedure for installation of new commercial service, industrial service, fire protection service, or residential service supporting four or more living units:

  1. Fill out a water service application with application checklist. Send completed application, checklist and stamped plans designed by a registered professional engineer in the State of Rhode Island to the Water Utilities Division. Completed application packages can be dropped off at  the Water Utilities Division located within the East Providence Public Works complex at 60 Commercial Way East Providence, RI 02914 or can be emailed to waterdept@eastprovidenceri.gov (1 set of printed stamped drawings will need to be sent to the water division regardless of submittal choice). Please note each new service requires its own separate application and checklist.
  2. Receive Water Utilities Division approval for new water service and pay new service installation fees.
  3. Acquire all necessary City and State permits. 
  4. Submit a backflow device design data sheet, shop drawings and sequence of construction as required by the Water Utilities Division. 
  5. Notify the Water Utilities Division 48 hours in advance of any water works installations for inspection.
  6. Test newly installed backflow assemblies and submit to Water Utilities Division.
