Born and raised in East Providence, Councilwoman Anna Sousa is the daughter of the late Jose L. and Maria J. Sousa, immigrants of São Miguel, Azores, Portugal.
Sousa, a graduate of East Providence High School, earned her Associates of Science in nursing before earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing at Salve Regina University.
A MedicalSurgical-Certified Registered Nurse (RN) at Rhode Island Hospital and Tockwotton on the Waterfront, Sousa serves as a Program Coordinator and Instructor with the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) Nursing Assistant Program.
Sousa is passionate about the environment, animals and the people of the great city of East Providence. She is a member of St. Francis Xavier Church of East Providence and a former catechist at Holy Rosary Church in Providence.
For many years, Sousa and her family have been active members of the Portuguese community and other social clubs including: Phillips Street Hall, Trinity Club, Holy Ghost Brotherhood Brightridge and Holy Rosary Band Society.
Sousa, who is fluent in Portuguese and takes annual trips to visit family and friends in the Azores, works to preserve the local heritage in East Providence while also promoting a continued relationship between East Providence’s Portuguese community and the Azorean community abroad.
Sousa is committed and focused on promoting East Providence’s economy and developing its underutilized waterfront. She is also focused on supporting local businesses by balancing tax breaks with other incentives established through legislation.
Sousa is focused on establishing youth activities in East Providence through unused city property, along with strengthening resources for mental health, the City’s aging population and low-income residents.
She is committed to East Providence’s growth, success and prosperous future.
